Dermatitis means "inflamed skin" and affects between about 1 and 5% of the general population. For some people, symptoms are related to their work. The two common forms of occupational dermatitis are irritant contact dermatitis and allergic dermatitis.
Substances causing occupational dermatitis are divided into two groups, known as irritants and sensitisers. Irritants act directly on the skin through chemical reactions. Sensitisers may only cause skin reactions after repeated exposure, with some people developing an allergic reaction.
