Occupational stress relates to the psychological illness caused by work-related stress, as a result of overwork. It must be shown that the employers were aware of the high level of work and the resulting stress, with specific complaints having been made by the employee. In addition, absence due to ill health makes it difficult for the employer to argue a lack of awareness about the situation.
Occupational stress usually arises when work demands and combinations exceed the person's capacity and capability to cope. These work-related demands can be a significant cause of illness and disease, and are linked with high levels of sickness absence, staff turnover and other indicators of organisational underperformance - including human error.
Recent statistics (according to the Health and Safety Executive) confirm that work-related stress is widespread in the UK's working population and is not confined to particular sectors or high risk jobs or industries.
