This category has been given various definitions over the years, such as work-related upper limb disorders (WRULD), repetitive strain injury (RSI), upper limb disorders (ULD) and musculo-skeletal disorders of the upper limb. None of these definitions is perfect in terms of classifying the types of conditions that may arise as a result of particular work practices. The term describes symptoms of pain, discomfort, weakness or swelling in the soft tissue of the fingers, hand, wrist arm and shoulder, caused by work.
WRULD is caused by factors that are quite normal in the workplace but, if taken to extremes, can cause injury (for example, typing). WRULD will not affect the whole workforce and it is difficult to identify vulnerable employees in advance. The main factors include continuous repetitive work without rest and recovery especially if force is used or the adoption of prolonged static and awkward posture.
